Job Description
**Facilities Services - Technical Services** invites applications for the **HVAC-R / Controls Technician** to perform the maintenance, repair, and operation of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, including all control and support systems for the equipment at the University of Montana.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Troubleshooting electrical, mechanical and control systems for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems;
* Rebuilding, repairing, and replacing equipment, including controls;
* Reading and working from blueprints and deciphering electrical schematics;
* Handling refrigerants in accordance with State and Federal laws;
* Performing preventive maintenance on all heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems;
* Performing spring startup and fall shutdown on air conditioning equipment;
* Maintaining equipment records and ordering all necessary parts and equipment; and
* Programming computerized heating and air conditioning controls.
This position requires the candidate to have the ability to use a variety of test equipment and become proficient with computer systems and components.
# Required Skills
* Must have an in-depth understanding of the heating cycle and sequence of operation of related equipment to be able to troubleshoot service and repair steam, gas, boilers, hydronic heating and H.V.A.C.R. systems
* Must be able to repair and maintain chillers, cooling towers, heat pumps, and groundwater cooling systems
* Must have an in-depth understanding of the refrigeration cycle
* Skill and knowledge to properly braze and solder ACR copper, fittings and use a refrigerant recovery unit and vacuum pump for making repairs
* Must be able to troubleshoot and repair all types of refrigeration systems including walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines, chillers, rooftop units and refrigerated air dryers
* Must be able to recover and re-charge refrigeration systems with refrigerant
* Ability to isolate and repair failed building control components and calibrate control systems
* Must have an understanding of how a ventilation system works and be able to troubleshoot, balance, and repair ductwork, sheet metal, and air distribution systems
* Must be able to read blueprints and interpret electrical schematics, controls schematics, and mechanical drawings
**Physical Requirements**
(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)
* Lifting: Ground to 36 inches, up to 100 lbs. Waist to overhead, up to 15 lbs.
* Carrying: Front carry up to 50 lbs for 50 feet or less, with one hand and two hands.
* Pushing and pulling forces required (during the use of tools and moving equipment): 100 lbs sustained.
* Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
* Reaching with your arms in all directions.
* Working overhead from various positions (standing, squatting, and on knees).
* Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold.
* Crouching and kneeling throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces.
* Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 lbs of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 lbs).
**Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment**.
# Minimum Required Experience
* High school graduation or equivalent and five (5) years of experience with H.V.A.C., refrigeration/air conditioning equipment service and repair and pneumatic HVAC controls, direct digital controls systems service and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* EPA Type 2 or greater Refrigeration Certificate.
* Applicants with Technical School diploma in HVAC are strongly encouraged to apply.
# Preferred Qualifications
* Understanding of air compressors and knowledge of repair procedures
* Knowledge of programming and servicing building automation controls, and the ability to adjust settings or logic from a laptop or a workstation
* Knowledge of pneumatic controls, thermostats, receiver-controllers, and related control devices

**Salary:** **$27.71/hr**
**Union Affiliation:** The United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters
**Probationary Period:** Four months minimum
